Last night we went birding with the plans to just stay home today but the birds were a calling so after some coffee and some large yummy cinnamon rolls we had to answer the birds calls and go.After all it is The Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend. We headed down the pass again to Fountain Creek, a cold day again snow was on the way was cloudy since this time we had plenty of daylight we could go down further to the end of the big lake then loop up around to where the bird feeders are,so we were off. This time I turned on the sound ID on my Merlin App and we were off.We could hear the Red-Winged Blackbirds and the Geese and a lot of other birds chirping away.Lots of little birds around little Nuthatches,Finches,Sparrows,Chickadees and Juncos,a little Brown Creeper. Some Woodpeckers and Flickers and a Belted Kingfisher boy they just have a look to them they are small but have such a large look of attitude.Besides the birds we saw last night(see Valentines birding at dusk post)we saw Green Winged Teals,Buffleheads, American Coots, they are cute little guys, also Northern Shovelers busy as always those beaks under the water shoveling the water and debris in it around and Gadwalls. Then the same as last night, birds nervous flying and squaking around then flies overhead a hawk.It is so nice to be learning what the birds are by look and sound,it is very exciting to hear a bird and say that is a …and look on the Merlin App and say I was right. And very satisfying to see a bird and be able to identify it correctly, the studying of the bird books is worth it.
